“How does mold grow in the bathroom?” you may ask. It’s a good question. Bathrooms are typically filled with inorganic surfaces (think tile, linoleum and porcelain) which are not normally surfaces that mold can grow on. On top of that, if you’re like most people, you do a decent job keeping your bathroom clean. And considering that many bathroom cleaning products are so noxious that they require the user to wear gloves while using them, how can mold stand up to such an assault week after week and just keep growing?

The answer isn’t pretty.

Even though you may think your bathroom is clean and even though it may look clean, when it comes to the conditions that allow for mold to grow, you’re probably not thinking – shall we say – microscopically enough. In fact, mold needs three things to start a robust colony and your bathroom supplies them in abundance:

1) Moisture. Of all the rooms in your home, the bathroom probably has the greatest number of water-dependent devices. Showers, baths, sinks and toilets all traffic in water. The fact that mold requires moisture and your bathroom has so many water-using devices means there’s always a danger that mold can get a foothold here.

2) Still Air. Lack of ventilation is the second thing mold requires and unless the exhaust fan is always cranking or the window is always wide open, your bathroom is most likely not well-ventilated enough. When airborne mold spores (mold’s microscopic “seeds”) settle on a surface in a very still room, they are given plenty of time to take hold on that surface and therefore have a vastly increased chance of taking “root” and starting a colony.

3) Food. All creatures need to eat. Sure, some creatures eat hamburgers and fries while others – plants for example – eat a mixture of sunlight and micro-nutrients from the soil. But mold, unfortunately, is far less finicky. Mold will make its home on anything organic. Seriously. The tiniest trace of organic material, when combined with moisture and a lack of moving air, can provide adequate nutrition to a whole colony of mold. Dust (which is mostly dead skin cells and dirt), soap scum, paper, carpet and even lint will all work well enough for mold when it’s hungry.

Think about the areas in your bathroom where these three elements come together and, if you look, you will probably discover mold or, at the very least, mold’s musty smell. Make sure to inspect under the sink, in the shower, and in the cracks between the floor and the wall, as these are the areas where you’ll likely find mold.

And now you’ll know how and why the mold is there.

Picking the right bathroom ceiling lights can be easy when you know what you want. I will explain in this article why it is important why and how to pick the right lights for your bathroom.

Ceiling lights can come in a fan ceiling light or a chandelier:

Chandelier lights are known in a dining room but these days you can put them anywhere to give that elegant touch to any room. These lights are very attractive and will give your bathroom a unique yet stylish and romantic feeling. Your friends will most definitely envy you for having a romantic chandelier in your bathroom.

Ceiling fan lights: These are fans with ceiling lights. I prefer this option due to the advantages it has to offer to a bathroom. A bathroom is intended to get wet and then will mold and it will start smelling. But with a ceiling fan you can prevent this from happening. The fan will keep your bathroom dry. These fan lights are not so attractive to the eye but are really a bargain when you come to think of it.

You do not need to remodel your entire bathroom to make your bathroom attractive and eye peeling again. With these bathroom ceiling lights, you can give your bathroom a unique and different look with either the chandelier or the fan light.

Here are some important factors to consider before purchasing any lights for your bathroom:

Brightness: The brightness of the lights is an extremely important factor. It should provide enough brightness to your bathroom to get enough light in all the corners of the bathroom.

Single or multiple lights: When choosing multiple lights on the ceiling lights you know that it will provide enough brightness, but sometimes too much light is really too much. If you want to do single lights, I will advice you to put a few single lights up in different parts of the bathroom. So you’ll need to sit down and think carefully how much light you want to have in your bathroom.

There are some really good looking bathroom ceiling lights available which might catch your eye.

Baths and bathroom taps have been important features in the house of average homeowners all over the world. They serve important purposes, they are something most people can’t live without and, for the more aesthetic of people, they are another element of the house which can add beauty to the overall decor of the house.

Installing bathroom taps can be expensive, not to mention a lot of work. Thorough planning, budgeting and clear vision are needed. Below is a simplified check list a homeowner can use prior to taps installation.

Calculate the Space

You may have a roomy bathroom or one that is space efficient. This factors into your choice of taps, as you might want wall mounted taps, or a longer spout, or slightly bigger knobs, if you choose two knob taps. People who are slightly clumsy or those who have unsteady hands may want taps with stronger levers; small space may look better with wall mounted taps while a longer spout may be in order if the panel is a bit far from the tub.

Consider the Materials

The kind of material that is suitable for your bathroom depends a lot on the kind of bathroom you have. Is it the guest bathroom which is a dry bathroom and is rarely in use? You might want to purchase different taps for personal bathroom which is regularly used and splashed with water, perhaps from your toddlers’ bath time.

Decide on Your Budget

Some plumbing work is involved in the installing of baths and bathroom taps. Consult a professional and ask for estimated cost. It is a good idea to have several work done at the same time as plumbers with a good sense of entrepreneurship will offer you a package discount.

The many designs, types, models and styles of baths and bathroom taps available in the market these days give homeowner more flexibility in making choices, developing design ideas and perhaps accommodating special needs.

For some people though, the number of choices available creates confusion and more questions to ask. After several browsing sessions, whether online or offline, the type and shape of bathroom taps are perhaps easy to choose but what about the installation? Should you put them up on your own?

Wall mounted bath taps involve a lot more work when compared to taps which are attached to the deck. That is why it is better that you have professionals install these taps. Some plumbing work is involved and you don’t want to mess things up and end up with more bills to pay.

If you are looking to have bath taps for the tub installed along with the tub, so much the better. The plumber can take care of the necessary drain adjustment and other plumbing work, and give you a package deal.

Remember to choose a spout that is long enough to deliver the water into your tub without splashing water all over the place. Keep in mind that wall mounted bath taps also require an access panel. It should not be difficult to have it installed at the same time, when your wall is still open.

Advanced planning goes a long way when it comes to installing baths and bathroom taps. You will be able to choose the style and function that suit you and your family best, cut back on extra costs and get the best out of your bathroom.

We all know that a bathroom is one of the most private rooms in the home, but it is also one of the most important. Not only are they a primary source room for human beings, but they reflect the personality and exceptionality of the owner. Sometimes the perfect bathroom already exists when we move into a house, but sometimes they need a little bit of help or updating. Bathtubs, for example, are one of the most used parts of the house, and for this reason, they can start to show their wear. After years of use, they can start to look old and dingy. Purchasing a new bathtub and getting it installed, however, can be very costly. For a cost-effective solution, many people opt for bath resurfacing when considering remodeling their bathrooms. This option can save you hundreds of dollars, and give your bathroom the new look that it deserves.

There are many different options when it comes to bathroom remodeling. A fresh coat of paint and some new linens can make a world of a difference, but sometimes, we need more than that to achieve the look that we want. Sinks, counter tops, shower enclosures, or bathtubs can easily become stained, scratched, chipped, or obtain other surface area flaws. Bath resurfacing is a wonderful option to replacing any of these areas, which uses an existing structure instead of a brand new one. Different options can include reglazing, refacing, or use of a new liner.

Some people prefer to take matters into their own hands, which can save you a lot of money. This option however, is not for everyone, as bathroom remodeling can be challenging and demanding. Bath resurfacing can be inconvenient and messy, and involve handling various different types of chemicals. If using this option, you must make sure that you protect yourself very well, and work in a well-ventilated area, as some of the fumes can be toxic and harmful in inhaled. The fumes can also be harmful to the skin and eyes, so protective clothing and goggles should be utilized.

Many people these days choose to hire a professional company to help with their updating needs. There are many bathroom remodeling companies out there that can help design and construct your dream bathroom. These companies will usually offer a free consultation or free estimate, and will make sure you feel completely comfortable with any option that you choose.

Whether you choose to go brand new, or go with a bath resurfacing option, the company will have a variety of materials to choose from so that you can really customize your needs.

So you’ve been out and purchased your brilliant new bathroom products, your stylish new taps, the basin you have always wanted and the ultra modern toilet you bought to keep up with your neighbours. Now all you need to do is plumb it all in. Usually, no problem at all, but there is a constant problem which rears its head in homes all over the world and that is, it’s not always feasible for you to connect to your main soil pipe (that 4″ Black pipe) from where you are installing.

For these situations however, help is at hand. Saniflo macerators are the leading brand of home macerator pumps in the UK. Discrete and practical there is a huge range of Saniflo macerators to suit any job. For the compact bathroom, there is a SaniCompact macerator which has a slim line design and fits discretely behind toilet. For back to wall toilet installations, the SaniPack macerator sits behind the wall alongside the concealed cistern, so is completely hidden from view. For a more complete solution, the SaniPlus macerator allows multiple connections at the same time, meaning that your washbasin, toilet and bidet can all be connected through the one product. All the Saniflo products ensure that your dream bathroom or convenient downstairs ‘loo’ can go ahead without too much unwelcome drama.

How do macerators work? Well, the term macerate means to soften, break and pump the excrement from your new toilet to your soil pipe. This is done under pressure in the same kind of way as an airplane toilet. The waste is transported through a new 22mm pipe until it reaches its natural home (the soil pipe). This kind of product can open up a whole list of possibilities and there is one for almost every room in the home – the Sanishower is testament to this. Whatever waste disposal issue you have, in which ever room you have, there is a Saniflo product to suit your needs.

Vintage bathtubs turn your bathroom into a room to show off and not hide away when guests come round.

Most people have the same boring white acrylic bathtub where the base is covered by either tiles or wood, which is placed in the corner of the bathroom. Why is it placed in the corner? This is because it’s not being showcased, it’s boring and usual and unremarkable in the extreme.

Vintage bathtubs are a completely different type of design and instead of being something hidden away they’re the centre piece of the room! They come in a variety of different designs such as being pedestal/clawfoot/slipper bathtubs and they’re truly remarkable to behold. Not only this but instead of being made out of the same basic white plastic, they’re made out of copper, cast iron, stone and marble! Instead of being something to be embarrassed about they’re worth bragging about!

Pedestal vintage tubs are bathrooms which instead of the base being covered up are actually bare and rose on a pedestal. The base can be made of stone/marble or cast iron and they make a remarkable and unique design to view.

Clawfoot bathtubs are bathtubs which are stood on four legs (similar to that of a table) and again where the base of the tub is laid bare. The thing I like most about this type of design is the intricate work which goes in to modeling and shaping the legs because it just adds another layer of class and elegance to the piece itself.

Slipper bathtubs make up another popular vintage tub and bath design and are so named because when viewing sideways look similar to a slipper where one end is raised above the other. This has supposed neck and back benefits because of the extra support, but from my perspective they’re simply just more comfortable to lie in.

When you walk into a bathroom you are always going to see a mirror of some description hanging from the wall. It may be all on its own or it can easily be built into another bathroom accessory which is giving you some storage space and small shelves. So here are a few things to consider when looking through the various bathroom wall mirrors in the market.

Firs of all you really do need to spend some time thinking about the size. It is important to know exactly where it is going to be located in the bathroom and also be aware of the different sizes that can fit in the space. It is very important that you get the size right so it sets the right tone in the room.

It is most commonly located above the sink and the most popular is portrait in shape rather than landscape. Obviously you do not need to have a full length mirror or anything even remotely close to this but do look at the height where it has to be hung so it is just the perfect height for everyone who is going to use it.

It is important to get a mirror with the right effect that shall make sure it goes with the rest of the bathroom. It looks out of place if you have a white bathroom and you buy a chrome mirror and the same is true about the size as too big can make it look completely out of place with everything else in the bathroom. A mirror should blend in and compliment the room and not become the main focal point out of every accessory in there.

It is possible to get bathroom mirrors that are shaped to help them blend in with certain styles. You can easily have them shapes like waves or just other funky shapes which can make them seem a lot more fun than the normal rectangular style that you shall see.

When it comes to materials used the most common are plastic, wood, and metal. Some may argue that plastic and metal are easier to keep clean with them being smooth and do not have the grain that wood has however the truth of the matter is there are no real differences. The choice of material should only come down to picking one that blends in with the rest of the room.

You are lucky in having such a wide range of mirrors to choose from as there are so many companies out there who deal with this type of bathroom accessory. With the various colors, shapes, sizes, and materials you are sure to find the perfect bathroom mirror for you and your bathroom.

Bathroom online design can help you create the bathroom that is just right for you. Online bathroom design means learning as much as you can about what designing the most functional and attractive bathroom really requires.

The bathroom can be more than a room for personal hygiene or grooming. For example, if you have the space, you can add home exercise equipment and a music system or TV in your bathroom. As you proceed with your bathroom online design, begin keeping a notebook with your ideas and magazine clippings of what you want your bathroom to be like.

Here are 5 bathroom online design tips that may apply to the bathroom that you’re creating:

1. Bathroom Lighting – your bathroom lighting can be natural or artificial. Lighting is used to illuminate and brighten the space and lighting can affect how you feel inside your bathroom. Use a window, a wall skylight or roof skylight to bring in natural light or a nice outside view. And a skylight that opens is good because the moisture created by bathing or showering can be reduced. Artificial lighting can be an overhead general light, a light over the vanity mirror or wall sconces on each side of the mirror to provide sufficient light for grooming.

2. Bathroom Ventilation – bathroom online design should analyze bathroom moisture. Since a bathroom generates humidity and moisture, this airborne water can cause problems with the bathroom finishes. A properly-sized power ventilator can be installed that will pull moist air out of the bathroom to the outdoors. Ventilating fans sizes are indicated by how many cubic feet of air they can move each minute (cfm). Use a ventilating fan that will remove air from the bathroom to the outdoors about seven or eight times per hour. For example, a 6′x8′x8′ bathroom equals 384 cubic feet, divide by 8 times per hour equals 48cfm size fan.

3. Bathroom Tile – if you are using bathroom tile and will have solid-color ceramic floor tile, use a different color tile to create a border around the bathroom floor. If you will use the same color tile for the floors and walls, select a different tile size for the walls or lay the wall tiles diagonally to create visual contrast. Use a different color grout between the tiles to make a more interesting look.

4. Bathroom Wall Decor – if your bathroom walls are soft or neutral colors, use colorful bath linens and bath mats to create a nice contrast. Good bathroom online design means the accessories such as towel rings and soap dishes should complement the materials, fixtures and colors used on the walls and floors. For example, do not use modern-looking chrome towel holders with antique brass faucets.

5. Bathroom Storage – plan how you’ll use the bathroom wall space. Having shelves or cabinets over the toilet, using corner shelves and placing towel bars above one another increase your available storage space. A medicine cabinet with mirror can hold grooming supplies, medicine and toiletries. An attractive combination sink and vanity and a shower caddy in your shower can provide additional bathroom storage.

Doing bathroom online design means reading as much as possible, thinking and planning what you want and need in this important room. From materials used to the bathroom layout to the finished colors, having a successful bathroom project is about knowing what options you have, then choosing the best ones for your project. Learn as much as you can about online bathroom design before building begins so you can have the best bathroom possible.
