“How does mold grow in the bathroom?” you may ask. It’s a good question. Bathrooms are typically filled with inorganic surfaces (think tile, linoleum and porcelain) which are not normally surfaces that mold can grow on. On top of that, if you’re like most people, you do a decent job keeping your bathroom clean. And considering that many bathroom cleaning products are so noxious that they require the user to wear gloves while using them, how can mold stand up to such an assault week after week and just keep growing?

The answer isn’t pretty.

Even though you may think your bathroom is clean and even though it may look clean, when it comes to the conditions that allow for mold to grow, you’re probably not thinking – shall we say – microscopically enough. In fact, mold needs three things to start a robust colony and your bathroom supplies them in abundance:

1) Moisture. Of all the rooms in your home, the bathroom probably has the greatest number of water-dependent devices. Showers, baths, sinks and toilets all traffic in water. The fact that mold requires moisture and your bathroom has so many water-using devices means there’s always a danger that mold can get a foothold here.

2) Still Air. Lack of ventilation is the second thing mold requires and unless the exhaust fan is always cranking or the window is always wide open, your bathroom is most likely not well-ventilated enough. When airborne mold spores (mold’s microscopic “seeds”) settle on a surface in a very still room, they are given plenty of time to take hold on that surface and therefore have a vastly increased chance of taking “root” and starting a colony.

3) Food. All creatures need to eat. Sure, some creatures eat hamburgers and fries while others – plants for example – eat a mixture of sunlight and micro-nutrients from the soil. But mold, unfortunately, is far less finicky. Mold will make its home on anything organic. Seriously. The tiniest trace of organic material, when combined with moisture and a lack of moving air, can provide adequate nutrition to a whole colony of mold. Dust (which is mostly dead skin cells and dirt), soap scum, paper, carpet and even lint will all work well enough for mold when it’s hungry.

Think about the areas in your bathroom where these three elements come together and, if you look, you will probably discover mold or, at the very least, mold’s musty smell. Make sure to inspect under the sink, in the shower, and in the cracks between the floor and the wall, as these are the areas where you’ll likely find mold.

And now you’ll know how and why the mold is there.

When you are looking for a new kitchen or bath in Toronto it helps to understand the different types of professionals who can help you to obtain your goals. For example, there are award-winning designers who can take any space and turn it into your dream bath or kitchen. There are also contractors who frequently manage every single aspect of a project, including the obtaining of permits and the final clean up. There are also a range of independent contractors who will provide only a single portion of the work on a kitchen or bath in Toronto, including plumbers, electricians, and carpenters.

Which should you work with? That all depends on the amount of work you, as a property owner, want to handle. For example, if you don’t mind managing all of the details then you might seek bids or estimates from designers and kitchen and bath specialty stores. If, instead, you want to focus on getting the best results possible, but without a lot of hassle or stress than you’ll want to find yourself a professional or award-winning designer of kitchens and baths in Toronto.

This is easier than it might sound and can begin with a simple search on the Internet. Simply typing in terms like award-winning and Toronto will turn up the best candidates possible.

You might also ask friends, neighbors, and family members for some recommendations – particularly if you appreciate the looks of their kitchen and bathroom spaces, or if they have successfully upgraded their kitchen or bath recently too. You can also inquire in commercial locations as well. For example, if you love the bathroom design of your favorite café it is perfectly acceptable to inquire for the name of the designer or contractor who managed the work.

The thing to remember about any work on a kitchen and bath in Toronto is that you cannot approach the designer as the proverbial “blank slate”. You are only going to get the best results possible by giving them an idea of what you want. Many designers ask their clients to develop a sort of idea book or notebook which contains clippings from magazines and catalogs, and even just items or images of “things” that appeal to them. This is the reason that some firms can become known for their award-winning designs – they incorporate unique colors, textures, and patterns inspired by their client’s personal taste and style.
